Welcome to the National Research Programme "Substainable Forestry" of the BMBF
As a contribution to ecological forestry, to the forest-timber value chain and products and their production systems, the objective of the federal ministry of education and research (BMBF) is to foster transdisciplinary research, technological developments and innovations.
The initiative is incorporated in the BMBF framework programme “research for sustainability” and is part of the European network WoodWisdom-Net (Era-Net). The aim of the promotion is to strengthen the national and international competitiveness of the forest-timber sector. Beyond this it aims at contributing to the national sustainability strategy as well as to the wood charter of the federal government.
Priority research areas and crucial questions for the development of innovative sustainability concepts and services from forests are as follows:
- Today’s and future forests: scenarios and visions. From a today’s perspective and from the scientific status quo, what are the guiding principles visions and trends in future forestry and for the forest-based industry? What position needs to be taken up to enable today’s and future generations to manage uncertainties and risks as well as chances of sustainable forest utilisation and development?
- Sustainable use of resources, utilisation and development of forests and densely wooded landscapes. How can forests and forestry landscapes be managed to improve quality of life and simultaneously sustain the supply of natural, social and economical resources and services from forests?
- Development of value added potential alongside the forest-timber chain. How to enhance and optimize further developments of regional, national and global forest-timber value chains including close-to-nature forestry, innovative use of timber and profit-oriented development of technology. How can this be achieved in an ecologically sustainable and socially equitable way?
Duration: 2004 to 2010
Budget: approx. € 27 million
